A Case Study in Cultural Branding: FC Bayern München x Indonesian Matchday
Challenge
Explore how our project for FC Bayern München bridged a global football brand with Indonesian grassroots culture, creating visuals that feel authentic and relatable to fans.
In the world of football, few names carry the weight and prestige of FC Bayern München. But for a global brand to truly connect with its international fanbase, it must go beyond the stadium. In Indonesia, football isn’t just a game—it’s a shared ritual woven into the fabric of daily life. From passionate debates in bustling food stalls to communal watch parties at the local pos ronda (neighborhood guard posts), the sport creates its own language of togetherness.
Our team was tasked with a unique challenge: to create visual storytelling that fused world-class prestige with genuine local authenticity. The goal was to avoid stereotypes and instead capture the real heart of how football is lived in Indonesia, making the players feel relatable and connected to local fans.
The Solution
An "Alter Lokal" Creative Approach
We developed two complementary visuals, each a carefully constructed snapshot of Indonesian community life:
- Podcast Goyang Lidah: We created a lively football podcast set in a classic warung-style room. Here, Bayern players are not just strategizing; they are enjoying sambal-filled meals and engaging in the kind of unfiltered, spicy conversation that defines Indonesian football fandom.
- Rapat di Pos Ronda: A late-night strategy session in a balai warga (community hall). Players gather with local fans under fluorescent lights, planning the match on a humble chalkboard like a tactical war room. This scene is rooted in community spirit—modest, democratic, and full of laughter.
This storytelling approach breaks down the barrier between celebrity and community, inviting players into the local experience rather than positioning them above it.
The Art of Relatability
Visual Details That Matter
Our artistic goal was to evoke a sense of familiarity and warmth. We achieved this through meticulous attention to detail. These elements were not added for effect; they were chosen to honor the authentic texture of Indonesian life:
Local Textures: We wove in elements like Batik patterns on tablecloths, Indomie boxes, Teh Botol, and plastic chairs.
